University registers green propolis patent against Covid's advance

A Brazilian student filed a pharmaceutical patent with a green propolis compound for Covid-19 treatment and prevention.

Natália Raquel Silva de Oliveira is 21 years old and is the Pharmacy course at the Education and Health Center, CES – Federal University of Campina Grande – UFCG, Campos do Cuité, in Paraíba.

Her discovery was the result of a scientific initiation project. In the research, the undergraduate student performed simulations of interaction between various substances present in green propolis with a viral replication protein of SARS-CoV-2 and found three substances with virucidal potential: two sesquiterpenes and a flavonoid.

In an interview with SóNotíciaBoa, professor Rafael Trindade, one of Natalia's advisors, explains that propolis compounds inhibit the virus's reproduction, preventing the disease progressing: “the results are very encouraging and encourage the continuation of the research”, he said.

According to Professor Rafael, the team carried out computer simulations with a molecular target to reach the result. However, he says laboratory tests will still be needed.

“In the future, we intend to isolate these three promising substances and test them to see which composition is the most efficient”, says the professor at UFGG.

Rafael tells that they decided to file the patent to ensure protection in the national territory.

The idea is to establish a partnership with a pharmaceutical company interested in producing the composition.

Rafael explains that a parallel study by USP – University of São Paulo, showed that green propolis as an auxiliary treatment reduced the hospitalization time of patients with COVID-19.

Green propolis is a resin produced in several species of bees in order to protect the hive infectious agents.

It is one of the most potent and broadest natural antibiotics.

precocious talent

The fact that a student who was still in graduation developing a patent also surprised the professors.

“This makes us very proud and satisfied that UFCG is one of the most innovative universities in the country. We are 2nd place in the ranking of patents.

When we are faced with a differentiated student like Natália, it is a duty as a university to provide the best possible training. Publishing is good, patent even better.

But the best thing we produce for society are competent professionals who are willing to make a better world. It is our most valuable asset”, celebrates Professor Rafael.

The student had the guidance of professors the Center for Sustainable Development of the Semi-Arid Region (CDSA) at UFCG, Bruno Medeiros Roldão de Araújo, Franklin Ferreira de Farias Nóbrega, and professor Rafael Trindade.

Also collaborated with the study Henriqueta Monalisa Farias (graduated in Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering at CDSA), Rafael de Lima Medeiros (graduate of Physics at CES/UFCG) and professor Nilton Ferreira Frazão (CES/UFCG).
