France condemns 11 people for digital harassment against a youth who criticized Islam

Teenager posted videos critical of the Muslim religion and started to receive threats and insults through their social networks

The French justice system convicted 11 of the 13 people who responded to allegations of cyberbullying against a teenager who posted videos critical of Islam on the Internet, reports the Qatari agency Al Jazeera. The sentences ranged four to six months of detention, but the sentences were suspended and will only be served if the offenders commit some illegal act again.

In 2020, the young woman, identified only as Mila, began posting videos criticizing the Muslim religion and the Koran, the holy book of Islam. Since then, she has been threatened, had to change schools and needed police protection. She said she felt like she had been "sentenced to death."

This is the first judgment based on a law created in January aimed at online crimes, including harassment and discrimination. “Social networks are like the street. When you pass someone on the street, you don't insult, threaten or make fun of the person,” said Michel Humbert, the judge in the case. “What you don't do on the street you shouldn't do on social media”.

The attitude of the young woman, who calls herself an atheist, divided opinions in the country. If on the one hand it became a symbol of the freedom of expression of thought, on the other it received harsh criticism for allegedly manifesting prejudice against Muslims and their religion. “I don't like any religion, not just Islam,” she said during the trial.

According to Mila's lawyer, she received more than 100,000 offensive and threatening messages. The trial, however, focused only on 13 of those thousands of digital attackers. The defendants are different religions and social classes. Two of them were acquitted for technical issues related to their processes.
